It hits all the notes with precision and creates an excellent backstory. Terms of Enlistment is solid, perfectly executed military sci-fi. And, here, we come to the basis of the next book but I’m not going to spoiler it. Suddenly, Grayson is fighting for his life, light years away from home, against an enemy intent on taking over a colony planet. It’s this turn of events that introduces a rather large plot diversion from a ravaged planet populated by either the very poor or the very rich.

But, after a particularly nasty engagement, he is transferred to the Navy and onto a spaceship far away from Earth. The book does weave a complicated undertone to the grunt action powering the book forward and there is some interesting commentary as Grayson begins his tour in the Army. Instead, he’s back on the streets of the warren-like welfare housing blocks, putting down food riots and fighting the very people he so desperately wanted to get away from. However, Grayson is assigned to the Territorial Army, dashing his hopes of being posted to an off-world colony. It’s perfectly executed and soon we’re entrenched in the training and development of the character. The services only accept worthy recruits and, even then, only a handful make it through training.įollowing Andrew Grayson through basic training, Terms of Enlistment hits all the military sci-fi tropes brilliantly. North America is a vast sprawl of government housing blocks and its residents have zero prospects other than the military. Set in the future of an Earth ravaged by over-population, pollution, lack of resources and wide-spread poverty, Terms of Enlistment sets the tone quickly. Thankfully, the book was everything I’d hoped it would be – and more. I first heard about it on a forum and it’s been on my wish list ever since with the anniversary of lockdown looming large I thought I’d treat myself.
